 제44선거구 워싱턴주 하원의원을 출마하는 이유

김원준 광역시애틀한인회장께서 저에게 한인회 부회장직을 제안했을 때 시민 사회단체 활동경험도 없고 한국어도 잘하지 못해 당황을 했습니다.

하지만 김 회장님께서 저로부터 가능성을 보신 것 같았습니다. 많은 고민을 했지만 한인생활상담소 김주미 소장님과 김 회장님에 대한 존경심 때문에 한인회 부회장직을 수락했습니다.  

아시다시피 이전에는 시애틀 형제교회 ‘아버지학교’전국 지도자 사역을 하고 있었습니다.   

하지만 시애틀한인회 부회장을 맡은 지 불과 4개월 동안 한인회 역사상 한 번도 해보지 못한 많은 일들을 함께 이뤄냈고, 우리 지역에서도 많은 일들을 이뤄냈다고 감히 자부합니다. 

사상 처음으로 바슬시와 스노호미시 카운티로부터 한국어로 된 아시아태평양 문화유산의 달(AAPI) 선언문을 받아내기도 했습니다. 또한 바슬시 웹사이트에 처음으로 한국어로 된 선언문을 게재했습니다. 

또한 광역시애틀한인회(GSKA) 청소년! 뿐만 아니라 스포츠! 그리고 커뮤니티! 등 3개의 부서를 새롭게 만들었습니다. 

청년! 특히 차세대 한인 리더를 양성하고 한인으로서 주인의식과 자긍심, 정체성을 갖도록 하기 위해 만들었습니다.

저는 스노호미시 카운티 공화당 빌 쿠퍼 의장으로부터 특히 한인 커뮤니티에 대한 봉사활동을 위해 공동위원장을 맡아달라는 요청을 받았습니다.  

저도 정치 경험이 전혀 없긴 하지만 이 직책을 수락했습니다. 하지만 이곳에서도 처음으로 소수민족과 아시아계 미국인 커뮤니티에 대한 아웃리치를 진행했습니다. 

스노호미시 카운티 공화당 웹사이트에 한국어와 외국어 번역을 시작했고, 한국어 통역이 가능한 무료 교육과 한국어 워크숍도 진행했습니다.  

지난 4개월 동안 저는 제가 소수 문화와 주류 문화 사이의 간극을 메우는 가교이자 커뮤니티의 역할을 하라는 소명을 받았다는 것을 깨달았습니다.  

이러한 이유로 저는 워싱턴주 하원의원 출마에 대한 소명을 받았다고 생각하며, 가교 역할뿐만 아니라 소수계 및 아시안 커뮤니티가 유권자 등록을 하고 지역사회에 참여할 수 있는 방법을 교육하고 훈련해 지역사회에서 목소리를 내고 투표할 수 있도록 하는 것이 중요하다는 생각을 하게 됐습니다.

우리가 목소리를 내지 못하면 우리 커뮤니티는 잠재적으로 표적이 될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 목소리를 내고 참여하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 모두에게 보여줘야 하며, 그렇지 않으면 우리가 살고 있는 커뮤니티에서 소외될 수 있다고 생각합니다.

저는 44선거구 주 하원의원 출마에 집중하기 위해 광역시애틀한인회 부회장직에서 물러났지만, 이제 모든 한인회뿐만 아니라 우리 커뮤니티의 모든 소수민족과 함께 단결하고 협력하여 커뮤니티에서 일어나는 일을 이해하고 함께 목소리를 내고 변화와 발전을 위해 함께 노력해야 할 사명을 가지고 있다고 생각합니다.

궁극적으로 우리 모두는 우리 아이들에게 더 나은 삶과 자랑스러운 미래를 물려줘야 하는 사명을 갖고 있다고 믿고 있습니다. 

I was surprised when President Won Jun Kim first offered me the position of vice president of Korean association because on had no civic engagement experience nor was my Korean that good.  

However I believe that president Kim saw some potential in me. Even though I wasn't sure what to do out of respect for Joomi kim and president Kim I accepted the offer.  

Prior to this as you know I was serving at hyungjae church as well as my ministry of national leader for father school.  

However after just four months of being the vice president we accomplished together many firsts which have never been achieved ever on Korean association history as well with our local cities as well.  

For the first time we gave the AAPI Proclamation in Korean language for City of Bothell as well as Snohomish county. 

In addition we published articles in Korean for the first time on city of bothell website.  

We also launched GSKA Youth! As well as Sports! And Community! Three new divisions.  

Youth! Especially was created to ensure the next generation of Korean American leaders and give them some ownership and a sense of pride and identity for being Korean American.  

As you may know I was also asked by the Snohomish county republican party bill cooper to be their co-chairman Especially to outreach to our Korean communities.  

I also accepted this position as well without any political experience. However here too for the first time we did outreach to our minority and AAPI community. 

My team launched both Korean and language translation on Snohomish county republican party website and we have also given free education and Korean workshops with Korean language interpretation as well.  

So these past four months I realized that I had been called to be a bridge and community for both our minority culture and mainstream cultures to bridge this gap.  

And it is for this reason that I believe I received a calling to run for state representative because I developed this heart to not only be the bridge but to also hope to educate and train our minority and Asian communities to register to vote and to show the way to get involved in their communities but also to allow that into important to have a voice and vote in our community.  

If we cannot have a voice then our community can become a target potentially.  We have to show everyone that it is important to have a voice and become involved or we may become outcast from the very communities we live in.  

Now that I have stepped down as Vice President of Korean association to focus on my candidacy for legislative district 44 state representative I am on a mission to partner not only with all of the Korean associations but also all of our Korean people minority people of our community to unite and partner together to understand what is happening in our communities and work together to have a voice and create change and progress together.  

Ultimately we all just want better lives and a future to be proud of for our children.
